Chapter 8
Shelly woke and sat up with a start. A stranger was in the room, over by the table. She looked at the man in question and asked, âWho are you?â
âMy name is Larry,â he said quietly. âShane and Diesel left me in charge.â
âHow are they?â she asked, pushing back the covers and realizing that somebody, likely Diesel, had thrown a blanket over the top of her.
âNo word yet,â he said.
She winced. âHow long have they been gone?â
âOver three hours.â He studied her quietly and said, âIf you want, we can order up some coffee. If you think you can go back to sleep, that would be for the best.â
âWhat time is it? Three oâclock in the morning?â
âAfter four actually,â he said.
âWhen are they due back?â
âAnytime,â he said. âThat just means there are probably complications.â
âCrap.â
âOne of the things that you learn about this business,â he said, âis that there are always complications.â
âSo itâs all about pivoting and adjusting as needed.â She hopped up, went into the bathroom, and splashed some cold water on her face, wishing she would have woken up later. But now that she knew, she didnât think there was any hope at all of her going back to sleep. As a matter of fact, as she checked her watch, it was a quarter to five. Back in the room, she sat down and said, âMy name is Shelly. Itâs nice to meet you.â
âNice to meet you too,â he said, with a ghost of a smile.
She studied that smile and said, âShane warned you that I would be difficult, didnât he?â
âHe said you might be a tad upset that they left without telling you.â
âNo, thatâs so typical of him,â she said. âI just want him to get back safe again.â
âWe all do,â he said.
âAny update on his family?â He shook his head, and she smiled. âWould you tell me if there was?â He shook his head again. She sighed. âYou cloak-and-dagger guys are all the same.â
âWe all have responsibilities and duties, yes,â he said. âIf that makes us all the same, well, maybe so.â
She sighed. âIf you donât know anything, how will we know if something goes wrong?â
âWhen the news reports hit the TV,â he said calmly.
She stared at him in shock. âSeriously?â
He shrugged. âWell, if the building blows up,â he said, âthereâll be a huge boom, and thatâs one way to get information,â he said. âHowever, weâre hoping that something subtler happens.â
âA boom,â she said faintly.
He nodded slowly. âThe entire building is wired.â
She sucked in a breath. âI know he does bomb squad and is some sort of an explosives expert.â
âSometimes itâs just not worth the effort,â he said.
âMeaning?â
âMeaning, sometimes itâs wired and cross-wired, and they donât have time to figure it out. It doesnât matter how much skill you have if itâs just too big of a job to manage in too short of an amount of time.â
âSo then what?â she asked. She hopped to her feet and paced. âHe shouldnât even be over here in the first place.
